Mother’s Day Prayer
Honoring God’s work in many different hearts
Many celebrate a joyful time on Mother’s Day, and others may experience pain because the day reminds them of losses or a difficult place in their journey. This prayer acknowledges and affirms what the Lord is doing in different lives on this special day…
We praise you, Lord, for the sacrifice
our mother made to give us life.
She carried us, nurtured us, surrounded us
in the warmth of her womb.
Forgive us when we take her gift for granted.
Thank you for those who birthed us, adopted us
or for spiritual mothers who mentored us.
We pray for them…
For the one whose desire for motherhood is unfulfilled,
Surround her with your comfort and hope.
For the unmarried mother who chooses to bring her baby to birth,
And the one who bravely gives her child to the care of an adoptive family,
Give them compassion and strength.
For the one who regrets her choice to end her pregnancy
Embrace her in your arms of forgiveness and restoration.
For mothers who ache from the loss of a child,
A miscarriage, stillbirth,
A baby or adult who passed from their arms,
Wrap them with your compassion and peace.
For those who ache from the loss of their mother,
Touch them with your presence.
For those whose mother spilled her own hurting soul on her child,
Cradle them with your affirmation and healing.
For those whose mother neglected to care for their needs,
Gather them into your arms of nurture and abundance.
For relationships broken between mother and child,
We pray reconciliation, forgiveness and wholeness.
We lift up those moms who offer their very best,
Who make mistakes, yes,
But seek your heart for wisdom and grace in raising their children
And for mothers who reflect the tenderness, encouragement,
gentle correction and guidance of the Lord,
Who pray for us, laugh with us, cry with us,
Whose perseverance points our way to your saving grace,
We praise you with grateful voices.
You gave us hearts that long for the motherly love
That You placed within women,
The heart that extends your own nature, community,
undaunted compassion and care.
Father, Son and Spirit,
You are ultimately our good and whole parent.
Help us imitate You as mothers and fathers in Your family.
Amen
